How to Make a Motion Comic with AI (Step-by-Step)

A motion comic used to take an animator, a voice cast, and a lot of patience. Today you can start with a finished comic panel or a whole page, describe what should happen, and let AI turn it into a motion comic with voiced dialogue and sound.

This guide walks through the whole process in Comik AI, using a real manga panel and the exact prompt we used. You will see the same panel animated two ways: once in its original black-and-white art and once colored automatically. Then you will see a four-panel page turned into one continuous video.

Key takeaways

  • A motion comic adds movement, voiced dialogue, and sound to existing comic art. You do not need to animate frame by frame.
  • In Comik AI, you upload a panel or a full page, choose an animated style, write a short prompt, and generate.
  • Original Art keeps your art exactly as drawn. Auto Color adds color to black-and-white manga as it moves. Both also come in Multi-Panel versions that turn a whole page into one video.
  • To give characters voices, type @ in the prompt and assign a voice to each character.
  • The most important line in the prompt tells the AI what must stay the same.

What is a motion comic?

A motion comic is a video made from static comic art. Instead of redrawing the scene, it brings the existing panel to life: characters move and change expression, the camera pans or pushes in, and dialogue is spoken out loud with sound effects and music underneath.

It sits between a comic and a full animation. The artwork stays recognizable, which makes motion comics a good fit for comic trailers, webtoon promotion, and short videos for YouTube Shorts, TikTok, and Instagram Reels.

What do you need before you start?

  • A comic, manga, or webtoon panel, or a full page. Use a single, clear panel for one scene, or a page with several panels to animate the whole page as one video.
  • Art you own or have permission to use. Use your own work, or images you created with Comik AI. Do not animate characters or pages you do not have the rights to.
  • An idea of what should happen. Who speaks, how they move, and how the camera should behave.

How do you make a motion comic in Comik AI?

Open the AI Motion Comic Generator and follow these five steps.

Step 1: Upload your panel

Click References and upload the comic panel, or a full page with several panels. Keep the default mode, Reference to video. It accepts image, audio, and video references, so you can add character voices in Step 4. Image to video and Frame to Video are also available when you want your image to be the first frame.

Step 2: Choose an animated style

Pick one of the four animated styles:

  • Original Art keeps the characters, line work, and tones exactly as drawn.
  • Auto Color adds color to black-and-white manga as it is animated.
  • Multi-Panel Original Art turns a full page into one video that unfolds scene by scene, in the original art.
  • Multi-Panel Auto Color does the same while coloring black-and-white manga.

Use the single-panel styles for one panel and the Multi-Panel styles for a full page. You do not need to change the prompt between Original Art and Auto Color. The style choice does the work.

Step 3: Write the prompt

Describe what to make, what must stay the same, and who speaks. If you are not sure where to start, click Use Default Prompt to fill in a starting prompt and edit it from there.

This is the exact prompt used for both videos in this guide:

Prompt

Convert this comic image into an anime-style animated video.

Keep the characters, scene, composition, camera angle, clothing, props, expressions, and speech bubble content unchanged. Do not add, remove, replace, or redesign any elements.

Generate character voices based on the dialogue in the comic:
- Young woman voice: [@Soft-Spoken Lady.mp3]
- Old man voice: [@old man.mp3]

Step 4: Assign a voice to each character

First, add the voices you want to use: pick them from the Voice Library, or upload your own recordings with Use Local Voice. Then type @ in the prompt and pick a voice. It is inserted as a mention, like [@Soft-Spoken Lady]. Put each mention next to a short description of the character it belongs to, so the AI knows which voice goes with which person.

Step 5: Generate and review

Generate the video, then watch it with the sound on. Check three things: the characters still look like the original panel, the dialogue is spoken by the right character, and nothing new appears on screen. If anything is off, adjust the prompt and generate again.

What does the result look like?

Same panel, same prompt, two styles.

Original Art: the black-and-white art, screentones, and line work stay as drawn, while the characters move and speak.

Auto Color: the same scene, colored automatically as it moves.

How do you turn a whole comic page into one motion comic?

Upload a page with several panels and choose Multi-Panel Original Art or Multi-Panel Auto Color in Step 2. Each panel becomes a scene with its own camera movement, and the scenes play in story order, so the whole page plays as one continuous video with voiced dialogue and sound. You do not need to animate the panels one at a time.

Here is the four-panel page we used: a short story about a new treadmill, told from day one to two weeks later.

Multi-Panel Original Art: each panel plays as its own scene in story order, in the original black-and-white art.

Multi-Panel Auto Color: the same page, colored automatically.

Pages work best when the panels have a clear reading order and readable speech bubbles. If a character appears in several panels, give them the same voice across the whole page.

How do you write a good motion comic prompt?

The prompt above has three parts. Each one solves a different problem.

  1. What to make. "Convert this comic image into an anime-style animated video." One sentence is enough.
  2. What must stay the same. "Keep the characters, scene, composition, camera angle, clothing, props, expressions, and speech bubble content unchanged. Do not add, remove, replace, or redesign any elements." This is the most important line. Without it, the AI may redraw the scene instead of animating it.
  3. Who speaks, and with which voice. One line per character, each with its own voice mention.

If you want specific motion, add it in plain language, such as "she slowly turns toward him" or "the camera pushes in on her face." Keep it to one main action per shot. The more you ask for at once, the less predictable the motion becomes.

How do you give comic characters voices?

The dialogue already in the speech bubbles becomes the spoken lines. Your job is only to match each character with a voice.

  • Describe the character the way they look in the panel, such as "Young woman voice" or "Old man voice."
  • Insert one voice mention per character with @.
  • Keep the speech bubble content unchanged in the prompt, so the spoken lines and the text on screen stay in sync.

Sound effects and background music can be added to match the scene, so the result feels like a finished clip rather than a silent animation.

How do you auto-color black-and-white manga while animating it?

Choose Auto Color in Step 2, or Multi-Panel Auto Color for a full page. You do not need to color the page first, and you do not need a different prompt. Comik AI colors the art as part of the animation, which is useful when you want a color version for social media but your manga was drawn in black and white.

If the original tones are part of the story's mood, choose an Original Art style instead. Many creators try both and keep the version that fits the scene.

What are common mistakes, and how do you fix them?

The characters look different from the panel

Keep the "unchanged" sentence in your prompt, and avoid asking for changes to clothing, hair, or the scene. The panel should be the only source of how the characters look.

The wrong character speaks a line

Make each voice description match how the character appears, such as their age or role, and keep one voice mention per character.

Extra text or new objects appear

Keep "Do not add, remove, replace, or redesign any elements" in the prompt, and do not ask for captions or titles that are not in the original panel.

The motion feels chaotic

Ask for one main action per shot. For a longer story told across several panels, put them on one page and choose a Multi-Panel style, so each panel gets its own scene.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need animation skills to make a motion comic?

No. You start from a finished panel and describe what should happen. There is no frame-by-frame drawing or keyframing.

Can I animate my own manga or webtoon?

Yes. Comic, manga, and webtoon panels and full pages all work, as long as you own the art or have permission to use it.

What is the difference between Original Art and Auto Color?

Original Art keeps the panel's original look. Auto Color adds color to black-and-white manga as it is animated. You can use the same prompt for both, and both also come in Multi-Panel versions for a full page.

Can I turn a whole comic page into one video?

Yes. Upload a page with several panels and choose a Multi-Panel style. Each panel becomes a scene, and the scenes play in story order as one motion comic with voiced dialogue and sound.

How long should my motion comic video be?

It depends on how much dialogue the panels contain. For a single panel with two speech bubbles, about 6 seconds is usually enough. For a four-panel page with eight speech bubbles, choose 20 seconds or more, and 25 seconds is recommended so every line has time to be spoken. Each video covers one panel or one page, and the maximum length depends on the model you select: up to 30 seconds with Seedance 2.5, 15 seconds with Seedance 2.0 and MiniMax H3, and 8 seconds with VEO 3.1.

Can each character have a different voice?

Yes. Type @ in the prompt to insert a voice for each character, and describe which character each voice belongs to.

Is motion comic generation free?

Motion comic videos are generated with credits on a paid plan. You can see the current plans on the pricing page.
